Completed Studies

Foscarnet-Ganciclovir CMV Retinitis Trial (FGCRT): Head to head comparison of foscarnet and ganciclovir.  Showed similar efficacy for the two drugs in controlling retinitis and a survival advantage for foscarnet.  Completed 1991.

Primary results: New Engl J Med 326:213-220, 1992.

CMV Retinitis Retreatment Trial (CRRT): Test of combination therapy with foscarnet and ganciclovir for recurrent CMV.  Showed that combination therapy was more effective than monotherapy.  Completed 1993.

Primary results: Arch Ophthalmol 114:23-33, 1996.

HPMPC Peripheral CMV Retinitis Trial (HPCRT): Trial of HPMPC (cidofovir) for newly diagnosed patients.  Showed that Cidofovir was effective for the control of retinitis. Contributed to FDA approval of cidofovir.  Completed 1996.

Primary results: Ann Int Med 126:264-274, 1997.

Monoclonal Antibody CMV Retinitis Trial (MACRT): Trial of adjuvant therapy with MSL 109.  Showed no difference between treatment and placebo groups.  Completed 1996.

Primary results: Arch Ophthalmol 115:1528-1536, 1997.

Ganciclovir Cidofovir CMV Retinitis Trial (GCCRT): Comparison of highly active local therapy (ganciclovir implant) versus systemic therapy (IV regimens) for treatment of newly diagnosed or relapsed CMV retinitis. Showed no difference between the groups for control of retinitis, Completed 2000.

Primary results: Arch Ophthalmol 131:4507-467, 2001.
